Dark Matter Labs — Neighbourhood Futures

Neighbourhood Futures in a +3ºC World

Neighbourhood Futures is a research and design programme at Dark Matter Labs. We work with public purpose organisations across the public and civic sector to design, prototype and implement tools at the intersection of affordable housing, just energy transitions, and regenerative material use.

In the context of the current climate trajectory, our work aims to support equitable, resilient neighbourhoods.

What we do

We prototype spatial data tools and models that reveal hidden patterns, risks, and opportunities across neighbourhoods, enabling more informed and equitable place-based decisions.

We design governance frameworks that enable communities to collectively own, steward, and make decisions about shared neighbourhood assets like land, housing, and infrastructure.

We model how housing, energy, and materials systems interact at neighbourhood scale — identifying leverage points for systemic change.

We model neighbourhood-scale climate exposures to help communities and institutions anticipate, prepare for, and respond to emerging environmental risks before they materialise.
